More info on Inscriptions

Inscription is not like Alchemy or Enchanting. Players will create a tradeable scroll that other players can then use to enhance their spells or abilities.
Inscription’s main purpose is to inscribe spells and abilities with additional power. Some examples given were:

  • Backstab could be enhanced to crit more often.
  • Shadowbolt could be enhanced to do additional damage.
  • Fireball could be enhanced to also cause a knockback effect. (This was a player idea that they felt was cool but probably not likely to happen.)

Inscription will also allow the player to create completely new items, but this part of the profession isn’t fleshed out enough for Blizzard to talk about just yet

Could work like enchantments, ie usings dust and shards to create the parchments…

  3. Luk3ling Says:

Ink and Parchment are already in the game with an extremely limited pool of items they’re used for (Example: the Goblin Rocket Fuel recipe.)

So like Sergio said, You’ll probably use the same type of reagents as Enchanters, Shards and Dust to enchant parchment.

Also keep in mind that you’re supposed to be able to create entirely new items.. I would take that comment to mean player designed items(Similar to SWG maybe?) SO there are a lot of entirely new concepts at work within this profession and no amount of speculation should be weighed on too heavily, because we know very little as of now..

  4. Gromphy Says:

I would like to know what lvl you’ll have to be to learn it….

  5. jay Says:

So should I start collecting enchating mats for inscription? My toon does not do enchanting right now

  6. Bloodmarie Says:

    from lvl 70

  7. Andrei Says:

might be similar to runewords in Diablo. sounds more like that than enchanting! completely new items means [in my books] that u take runes and “carve” them into your blade making it different, altering the stats, lengthening durability, enhancing damage, or other stuff like that. it wont be just like runewords… I see it as more of a DK capability to generate the rune, and then transcribe it on a scroll in order to make it available for others.
anyways my question is: how many professions will a DK be able to learn! and also do I have to be a DK in order to learn Inscription?

  8. Andrei Says:

aww just disregard the second question, I realized it’s dum! :)

  9. admin Says:

Yeah, I don’t see why you would have to be a DK to do inscriptions. And I’m sure DK’s will get 2 profs just like everyone else.

With a goal of staying on the road, I have characters to cover all the professions that I play in turns so they can always help each other make stuff. I’m hoping and suggesting that Inscription can make Diabloesque Runes and scrolls to close holes in the Azeroth economy. It would be nice to be able to make a socket in lower level items (30ish item level, recipes for blacksmiths and leatherworks etc with a socket, or penned as a socket scroll) and make +1 some-stat runes. I’d guess that an inscriptor would be able to gather silver leaf to inlay silver runes (+1), goldthorn to inlay gold runes (+2) and possibly mine veins to get stone more often than ore (share veins with miners) to make the runes. They could take the metal dust that jewelcrafters sell as trash to mix with ink and parchment to make scrolls.

It’d be really nice if an inscriptor could make rune claw fist weapons where each “claw” is a rune stone. Up to item level 15 for one rune, 30 for 2, etc.
Any leather wearing class would love a knock-back Nef rune in a shield or weapon when solo. Rea$$y love it.
A personal bind on pickup trinket might be made that could be the crowd control equivalent of Frost Nova or Gouge that would, on use, knock back enemies 5 yards and stun for a second or two. The mechanics for bombs and knockaway already exist.
    Bow: Melody = Shael+Ko+Nef

  11. Bevelle Says:

Will the scrolls created from Inscription be a one time item or will it be like gems and enchants, which you have get new ones when you get new gear or something like that?

  12. WoWancer Says:

well i hope certainly not anything like torm sas the last thing this game needs is more twinks with godly gear, you just make BGs boring and stupid for other low level players who dont have lv70s to back them up with +15 agility enchant on every item
i believe enscription will not use any of the mats available to us now like gems that werent in the game until JC prof actually came along with BC
i certainly am going to drop one of my profs for inscription as i imagine prices on those scrolls will be sky high for the first 2 moths or so until finally settling down to reasonable, and i dont want to pay 1000g for a +30 dmg inscription for my mind blast
i am very curious about the other side of inscription prof hope it will turn out as a bind on pick up trinket with an AoE on it as torm sas
however these are all speculations we have no apparent in depth info to say anything for certain
still hoping to reduce the cooldown on some spells though :)

  13. Mara Says:

Amassing inscriptions as an end game player could get really old really fast if they take up bag slots. On my 70 Warlock, I already have one bag devoted to soul shards, and another only for herbalism, leaving three for items I collect on the way. Out of those three, one is devoted to potions, bandages, food, and drink, and another is occupied by quest items if necessary. And I’m not cheap, I got the cla$$y 18-slot bags, but running long instances gets old fast without planning bag space. If inscriptions are NOT like enchants (i.e. applied to an item rather than carried with you), I have a feeling they’re going to be helpful **Sometimes** but obnoxious to carry during everything except BG’s, really.

  14. Chris Says:

    Re: Mara
Doubtful that you’ll have to carry these runes with you. Blizz said somethign about inscriptions being on paper, so I’d assume it’s a consumable scroll, one time use for permanent +dmg/rng/cd/whatever. Cause I feel your pain on the bag slots. My warrior has a 28 slot mining bag (usually full) and a 24slot herbalism bag(also usually full) on him all the time, but I’ve only got the cheapy 16 slot netherweave bags… 1 devoted to quest items, one devoted to my second set of gear (tanking/dps), and then the third for food/pots/loot. sucks.

  15. Antilles Says:

ignore my last comment it wasnt PolitE at all, aNd I’d like to Say…..i cant wait for inscription plz make it actually help spells and not be a somewhat meaningless proffession to pick up like enchanting was (can just go to other people for enchants, so whats the work for :-) )

  16. Mishugashu Says:

    ….

Inscription applies to your toons ABILITIES. This has nothing to do with items. The only reason the word “item” was brought up, is because you will make an item (IE Scroll of Cooldown Reduction) that you can use, trade to a player, or put on the auction house. This scroll will then be applied directly to the toon’s ability. It doesn’t enchant gear… this isn’t an enchanting sub-prof. The only question is, if you get a new rank of ability, will you have to re-inscribe it?

  17. Matt Says:

I hope that this will act like gems in that you can have both an inscription and an enchant on the same item. I’d suggest that they go on items you don’t normally enchant but tailors make thread, leather workers make armor ktis, and there’s glyphs to cover the rest of the armor.

It never struck me that these might be like scrolls currently in game. That is ‘temporary’ effects. Where the inscription profession will most certainly have recepies to make items of this type (alchemists make potions which drop) I’m sure there will be those that are more permanent. There may even be those that are like transmutation ‘apply this scroll to a gem to give it +whatever’ which would be a very new interesting concept.

There’s a lot that can be done with this profession. I must say though, I am NOT looking forward to leveling ANOTHER profession to 450. I have enough expensive ones as it is.

  18. Jeff Says:

This sounds to me like it will be very similar to the way that cards are in the game of Rappelz, for those who have played that game. You attach the scroll to your actual spell in your spellbook, not to an item.

  19. Tyler Says:

What i want to know is will scrolls affect only a single rank of the spel/ability or all ranks? if you could customize by spell it would REALLY be amazing

  20. Samuel Says:

As others may have said, I hope this doesn’t turn out like enchanting as well. The concept of enchanting is good, however, the mechanics of disenchanting is terrible. Enchanting in itself is a terrible profession that rarely makes if at all, very small amounts of money. Some may argue saying they make a lot of money from enchanting, but then you have to get into the “what items did you destroy to get the mats” and what your net profit (if one exists) actually is, etc. etc.

The idea of inscription seems sound, I hope blizz doesn’t screw it up.

  21. C.S.Strowbridge Says:

I want to know how many inscriptions could you have active at once?

  22. Xuru Says:

You can only have 1 permanent and 1 temporary enchant on any of your items. Like spell damage enchant and wizard oils.

So inscription will mostly have it also.
    Forexample,
[30 Spell Damage Up] ( Requires Spell Level 68++)
This is a permanent inscript and a temporary one during raids like
    [10 spell hit for 1 hour](Requires Spell level 68++)

And this inscripts can scale with the spell rank.

30 Spell damage Requires rank 68+
20 Spell damage Requires rank 58+
15 Spell damage Requires rank 48+
10 Spell damage Requires rank 38+
5 Spell damage Requires rank 28+

This will be applied by openning spell book to the applicable rank (level you learned it).

It will be a good idea to name them all like [ 30 Spell Damage to Mind Blast] since there is manyyyyyy ranks and manyyy spellss. So they should have a common name [Runed Fiery Inscript] (20 Additional Fire Damage to any spell 68 ++ )).

There are many speculations about what they will use or what is the secondary spec needed..
They can transcript this inscripts to a herb, leather, parchament.
For main materials, I guess, They will share all gatherings ie herbs and mines as well as skinable mobs.

Rather than gathering it will have a different name, may be like “Purify” (same as disenchant and prospect)

Purifying : Gathering the essences needed for Inscription profession.

  23. Falcon Says:

Mishugashu is completely right, this is not about making items, but boosting the stats of your spells. Also, whoever said JC mats weren’t in the game before BC, well, your a clown. Only the lvl 60+ stuff wasn’t in the game, because you couldn’t get past lvl 60, funnily enough.

  24. Xuru Says:

    Latest info taken from other websites;

    Inscription
    • Inscribers will create glyphs that allow players to modify their spells and abilities.
    • The first recipe is going to requires Peacebloom, thus they’ll rely on the herbalist gathering profession.
    • Every player will get a new spell book page to which they can add six glyphs – currently, four major and two minor.
    • Major glyphs will be effective in combat – adding damage over time or stun to a physical attack, for example – while minor glyphs will give convenient or cosmetic improvements, removing the need for some spell reagents.
    • Glyphs can be sold on the auction house.

  25. Steve Says:

RE Antilles: Enchanting aint a waste of time :P u realise how much money a good enchnater can earn within a matter of days if he has the mats. E.G Mongoose ench (arounds 460g on my server) etc etc lol and inscription will be fun i think but yeh mb a bit bag comsuming.

  26. james Says:

I hear that inscriptions use an exstention of your spellbook and u can cary 4 major and 2 minor inscriptions. Start saving up herbilism and enchanting mats because as soon as wrath comes out the price will skyrocket.
